Kubernetes probes are a powerful mechanism for ensuring the health and availability of your applications. However, they are often misunderstood or misconfigured, leading to more harm than good.
Types of Probes
Kubernetes provides three types of probes:
Liveness Probe
Determines if a container is still running. If it fails, the kubelet kills and restarts the container.
Readiness Probe
Determines if a container is ready to serve traffic. If it fails, the pod is removed from service endpoints.
Startup Probe
Determines if the application within the container has started successfully. If configured, liveness and readiness probes are disabled until it succeeds.
Why You Shouldn’t Set Them Blindly
While probes are essential, misconfiguring them can cause cascading failures, unnecessary restarts, and degraded performance. Always consider your application’s specific startup time and behavior when configuring probes.
